India's capital Rises to Dangerous Smog Following Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" range.
Record-Breaking Pollution Readings
Various sections of the capital registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents ten times the recommended threshold established by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable levels.
Fireworks Ban and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous haze that covers the capital as winter begins.
Yet in recent months, the newly elected regional leadership appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Implementation
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, the court complied with the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated periods throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst measurements observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
International Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing declining pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants traveling from India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have continued as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the worst records ever recorded in China's capital, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a convergence of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Medical and Financial Toll
The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the Delhi area is significant, according to various investigations.
These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for 10,000 premature mortalities each year in the city.
